136-G. Adapting Multifamily Design to Senior Living Communities

Presented by:
Derek Perini, Senior Interior Designer, Bernardon, Kennett Square, PA
Michael McCloskey, Associate Principal, Bernardon, Philadelphia, PA
Doug Hertsenberg, Principal, Bernardon, Wilmington, DE
Christa Daniello, Vice President, Sales, The Osborn, Rye, NY

Over the last several years, baby boomers and empty nesters have been flocking to multifamily rental units. Assuming current rates over the next 10 years, renters over age 65 will contribute to over half of overall renter growth, with an expected increase of 2.2 million additional renters over age 65. (source: Axiometrics)

What this means for senior living communities is that current adult influencers (son or daughter of resident) as well as the next generation of senior care residents are increasingly accustomed to today’s multifamily design trends, and have a similar expectation for either their parent and/or themselves. In an ever competitive landscape, senior living organizations will need to meet this consumer demand by gaining awareness of current multifamily residential trends and adapting those elements in their own communities. By looking to outside sources for design inspiration, senior care organizations can effectively influence occupancy rates and ultimately their bottom line.

Drawing on perspectives from architects, an interior designer, and a Vice President of Sales at a senior care community, our panel of experts will help attendees understand and integrate multifamily design into the senior care environment. We will explore what works and what doesn’t, and what’s truly important to ensure the success of senior living communities in the future.

Learning Outcome(s):
  • Understand the impact of current multifamily residential trends and the changing lifestyles of many older adults.
  • Consider how layout, amenities and geographical setting play a huge role in the success of today’s multifamily rental communities.
  • Discover ways to successfully adapt and integrate multifamily design elements into the senior living environment.
