Bernardon Haber Holloway Continues Designing Award-Wining Facilities at Willow Valley
September 2005 - The Keystone Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc., honored Spring Run at Willow Valley with a 2005 Award of Excellence.
Designed by Bernardon Haber Holloway Architects PC and constructed by Paul Risk Associates, Inc., of Quarryville, Pennsylvania, Spring Run is the most recent addition to the Willow Valley Retirement Communities complex located in the heart of Lancaster County, PA.
Spring Run encompasses a core building and four residential buildings. The 34,500 SF core building consists of a 2,800 SF, two-story main dining room, commercial kitchen, library/reading room, billiard rooms, activities room, meeting and conference rooms, bank, post office, nurses' suite, beauty parlor and administrative offices. The residential buildings are five-story, pre-cast concrete plank and masonry structures containing 210 residential units with a full basement level garage.
"Willow Valley is known for enhancing the experience of its residents. This is also a strong belief of ours and we are proud to be a part of Willow Valley's success," said Steve Brown, project architect with Bernardon Haber Holloway.
In a continuous effort to meet the desires of its residents, Willow Valley implemented a resident request program to ensure that the individual desires of the residents were brought to reality as they made choices from 50 optional items for their apartments.
Aspects of the project which posed various degrees of challenges that were successfully met by the design team included siting the buildings on a limited linear parcel; the ability to internally traverse each building despite the sloping terrain; and designing a distinct exterior facade for each building while maintaining an aesthetically pleasing compilation of the entire facility.
Working on the project with Bernardon Haber Holloway and Paul Risk Associates were Design for Functional Interiors, interior designer, mechanical/electrical contractor Clark, Inc., and plumbing contractor Protech Mechanical Contractors.
The team was also recognized in 2004 by the National Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors for the new Cultural Center at Willow Valley, a "stand alone," 82,000 SF facility that offers a broad range of amenities to the residents of Willow Valley by encouraging interaction and participation while enhancing physical and mental stimulation.

Bernardon Haber Holloway Retained as State's Liaison for First Veterans Home in Delaware
February 2005 - Delaware's only Veterans Home will soon be constructed on a "fast-track" schedule with help from Bernardon Haber Holloway Architects PC.
Bernardon Haber Holloway will act as the State of Delaware's Owner's Representative for the construction of the first federally funded Veterans Home in Delaware. The firm will assist in the selection of the design-build team as well as assuring quality control throughout all phases of construction.
According to Bill Holloway, of Bernardon Haber Holloway, the fast-track schedule combines design and construction under one proposal and saves time by combining the architect-of-record and the builder on one team and allows for the beginning of initial site work before the final design is complete. "As the State's representative, our role is to act as a liaison between the State and the design team to accelerate the construction of this new Home within 18 months," said Bill Holloway, "Under a traditional construction schedule, it would take approximately 2 to 2 1/2 years for the project to be completed."
The new home, located in the Greater Milford Business Park in Milford, DE, will accommodate up to 150 beds and provides to Veterans traditional nursing home care as well as some assisted living options. Delaware is the last State in the continental US to provide a Veterans Home. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, there are over 80,000 Veterans living in Delaware.
Working on the project with Bernardon Haber Holloway are construction manager Heery International, Inc., civil/geotechnical engineering firm Duffield Associates, Inc., and mechanical/electrical engineer Brinjac Engineering. The Home is scheduled for completion in December 2006.
The firm was also instrumental in the expansion and renovation of the Delaware Veterans Cemetery in Bear, DE. The state maintained cemetery provides internment services and facilities for Delaware residents and their families who served in the armed services.
