Amtrak Wilmington Station Rededicated

Bernardon Haber Holloway Architects PC is pleased to announce the completion of the restoration and renovation of the historic Amtrak Wilmington Station.  At a ceremony celebrated on March 19, 2011, the station was dedicated as the Joseph R. Biden, Jr. Railroad Station in honor of current Vice President of the United States, Joseph R. Biden, Jr. who was in attendance.

Originally designed in 1905 by Frank Furness, the renowned Philadelphia architect who designed some of America's greatest railroad stations, the Wilmington Station was Furness's last great station design and the only one of his large urban stations that is still standing.  Amtrak commissioned Bernardon Haber Holloway, assisted by Frens & Frens Restoration Architects, to restore and renovate the historic Wilmington Station.  Improvements included dramatic new facade lighting, improved accessibility for persons with disabilities, redesign of the concourse to provide improved function for Amtrak operations, increased space for lease to private retail tenants, and the restoration of all of the remaining historic portions of the station interior which were hidden behind previous office additions.

The restoration and renovation of this local landmark anchors the largest cluster of Furness-designed railroad buildings still standing anywhere in the world.
