Bernardon Haber Holloway Architects Honored For “Design Excellence” By American School & University Magazine

March 2, 2015

Bernardon Haber Holloway Architects has been selected for publication in Penton Publishing’s American School & University® (AS&U) 2014 Architectural Portfolio, an annual competition honoring education design excellence.

In the category of “Renovation/Modernization” Bernardon Haber Holloway was recognized for the Perkins Student Center on the University of Delaware Newark campus. The Bernardon Haber Holloway design team was challenged to reposition an aging student center with a new dynamic Student Lounge and a reconfigured Lobby, as well as transforming a windowless lower level into an inviting student community space. The project was designed to be delivered on a tight construction schedule between the end of spring classes and the arrival of students for the fall semester.

Highlighted features of the newly renovated Student Center included a sweeping corridor “promenade” and a new student lounge that is opened to the exterior by means of new floor-to-ceiling windows. Collaboration among the design team, staff and students allowed the firm to create a fun space while using environmentally friendly product selections for flooring, walls, lighting and furniture.

The Tower Hill School Math and Science Center was honored in the category of “Specialized Facility.” Tower Hill desired to provide new facilities for upper school math and science classes affording them the ability to enhance their current curricula while accommodating a sloping site and close proximity to neighborhood residences.

Bernardon Haber Holloway answered these challenges by designing a 25,000 square foot, two-story facility that blends seamlessly into the fabric of the existing school campus and neighborhood, and includes six, 1,500 square foot science laboratories, four Math classrooms, a Lecture Hall and an automated Observatory dome.

The 2014 Architectural Portfolio was the 32nd Annual Competition held by AS&U, a monthly educational facilities, purchasing and business administration magazine. A jury comprised of American Institute of Architects (AIA) Committee on Architecture for Education members and education administrators evaluated submissions from architectural firms, schools and universities across the country, ultimately choosing one hundred twenty-seven projects for publication.

Both of Bernardon Haber Holloway’s designs perfectly fit AS&U’s standards for determining citation winners, which include environmental stewardship, comfortable and flexible learning spaces, and holistic design solutions among their criteria.
